Following is a list of writing awards and nominations my work has received.

Winner: Australian Shadows Award

I am honoured and thrilled to have received the Australian Shadows Award (best Collected Work 2018) for my short story collection Shadows on the Wall. To be frank, I was both stunned and over the moon.

Thanks go to: Gerry Huntman and the IFWG Publishing Australia team for having faith in my work and publishing the book. Shaun Tan for his generosity providing a fantastic cover painting and an internal illustration for one of my stories. Isobelle Carmody for writing a generous and beautiful introduction. Rebecca Fraser for her great editing.

Thanks to the Australasian Horror Writers Association for making the award possible, and to Silvia Brown for organising and emceeing the awards, and to the convenors and judges.

I would also like to recognise and the other finalists, Kaaron Warren, Andrew Cull, Brian Craddock and David Schembri. I have read their books and they are great, well worth your attention. Go read them if you haven’t already and you’ll see what I mean.

And last, but not least, thanks to support and generosity of my friends the Aussie SpecFic community, those writers who have helped me improve my work, gave me blurbs for the book, launched and spruiked it!

2018 – Winner: Australian Shadows Award

Winners of the 2018 Australian Shadows Awards have been announced. The award is given by the Australian Horror Writers Association (AHWA) for “the finest in horror and dark fiction published by an Australasian within the calendar year.”

2000 – Nominee: William Atheling Jr. Award for Criticism

The William Atheling Jr. Award for Criticism or Review is awarded annually by the members of the Australian National Science Fiction Convention and is presented along with the Ditmar Awards. The award is named in honour of Golden Age SF writer James Blish who used the “William Atheling Jr.” pen-name for his own critical writing.

Nominated for: The Coode St Review of Science Fiction, edited by Jonathan Strahan and Steven Paulsen.

1999 – Winner: Ditmar Award – Best Anthology

The Ditmar Award (Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award) is awarded annually at the Australian National Science Fiction Convention to recognise achievement in Australian science fiction.

Awarded to: Dreaming Down-Under, Edited by Jack Dann and Janeen Webb (HarperCollins Australia/Voyager). 1999 – Winner: World Fantasy Award – Best Anthology

The World Fantasy Awards are awarded annually at the World Fantasy Convention for outstanding achievement by writers, editors and artists working in the field. According to wikipedia the world fantasy award is “considered among the most prestigious in the speculative fiction genre”.

1999 – Nominee and kind of Winner: William Atheling Jr. Award

This was a strange year for me at the William Atheling Jr. Award. I was nominated for my contributions to the The MUP Encyclopaedia of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy, but the winner was Paul Collins for the very same book… Paul was the editor, but I was the assistant editor (along with Sean McMullen) and the primary contributor so I kind of won anyway. But not really…

Nominee for: Contributions to the The MUP Encyclopaedia of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy. Awarded to: The MUP Encyclopaedia of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy, edited by Paul Collins (Assistant Editors: Sean McMullen and Steven Paulsen).

1998 – Finalist: Aurealis Convenors’ Award for Excellence

The Aurealis Awards are selected annually in a number a categories across the speculative fiction category. The encyclopaedia was nominated for the prestigious convenors’ award, and although we were unsuccessful I am delighted the award went to the multi-talented Shaun Tan.

Finalist for: The MUP Encyclopaedia of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Awarded to: Shaun Tan for his artwork in The Rabbits, (Lothian) by John Marsden.

1997 – Runner-Up: The Ditmar Award for Best Australian Short Fiction

The Ditmar Award (Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award) is awarded annually at the Australian National Science Fiction Convention to recognise achievement in Australian science fiction.

Runner-Up: The Stray Cat (Lothian) by Steven Paulsen.

Winner: “The Sword of God” – Russell Blackford.

The Origins Awards are presented annually by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design at the Origins Game Fair for outstanding work in the game industry.
