Interviews with Australian SF writers and publishers
This page contains snapshots of the various interviews I have conducted with (mostly) Australian SF writers and publishers. The odd one out in the list is the international fantasy bestselling author Stephen R. Donaldson. The opportunity to interview Donaldson came about quite by accident in 1983 after my brother and I had been to Monash University to hear Donaldson speak. This was my first ever interview and it shows, but nevertheless it started me thinking about writing and publishing SF, not the least because Donaldson’s successful Thomas Covenant books were rejected by every fiction publisher in America, including Del Rey Books, the publisher who finally published the series!
Ten years later, I launched the Australian SF Writers’ News. My idea was to use the magazine to help build a network for Australian SF writers, share information about markets, encourage new writers and publish articles of interest to the local SF writing community. It seemed natural to include interviews with the Australian writers who were finding publishers for their work. I also managed to interview a couple of book publishers who were at the forefront of realising the potential of locally written science fiction, fantasy and horror fiction.
